I was supposed to go to Trinidad tomorrow. I say "supposed to" because scheduling called me up just as I was fantasizing about tropical beaches and said "no, not for you." I shall instead be in Fort Lauderdale. Umm... Yay?

In honor of the fact that I have no air conditioning in my apartment (as I'm not here enough, I've decided to sweat it out rather then cry tears of emo!pain over my electric bill) I've uploaded a a few more of my Iceland photos. If I can't be in the cold, at least I can think cold thoughts (excluding the tropical beaches thing, which scheduling has absolutely WRECKED for me).

Anyhow, as I am a complete and total glutton for aerial photography and tend to weasel my way into the cockpit at every opportunity (better windows means better shots!) I have a selection of Glacier photos for your viewing pleasure. Remember, it's the middle of summer: Think cold thoughts!

Öræfajökull

This is Öræfajökull. The largest active volcano in Iceland, or at least this is a picture of part of it: as it is massive. I love that it's a volcano covered in snow. Ice wins! Woohoo!

I have the Icelandic people to thank for these shots. We were happily making our way to Budapest and instead of focusing on the headphones to be purchased for 200 Kronur or whatever else we were selling, everyone was pressed up against the windows taking pictures. That's generally a big indicator that what's below us is pretty damn interesting. I'd say that flying over Vatnajökull Glacier (of which Öræfajökull is but a mere part) definitely makes the list of things to look at.

Tongues of Vatnajökull

This is the south eastern end of the giant Vatnajökull Glacier. I could just leave it at that, but seeing as how I broke my brain scouring all kinds of maps (Google Earth, Wikipedia and a plethora of others) I feel the need to share my findings.

Jökulsárlón is the largest glacial lake in Iceland (top right corner). It's located at the end of the Breidamerkurjökull Glacier, a tongue of the Vatnajökull Glacier. Just below the Breidamerkurjökull Glacier is Breidamerkurfjall Mountain, an offshoot of Iceland's largest volcano: Öræfajökull. Fjallsjökull Glacier to the south wraps around Breidamerkurfjall. Two smaller glaciers: Hrútárjökull and Kviárjökull can be found to the south with Hrútárjökull directly beneath Fjallsjökull. The two small glaciers are separated by a mountain range that is an offshoot of Öræfajökull. Icelands' Ring Road can be seen twisting its way around Iceland between the glaciers and the ocean.

Now, after reading all that, the major question is: are your eyes crossed yet?

If you're having a hard time following, click on the picture. The one on my flickr site has notes.

Skeiðarárjökull

This is Skeiðarárjökull. It is one of the main southern arms of the Vatnajokull Glacier.

Glaciers carry huge amounts of dark basalt gravel and dust that they've picked up as they have slowly eroded the underlying rocks. When a glacier recedes it leaves behind all the silt and sediment and gravel that it picked up creating a large plain of deposited runoff called a sandur behind it.

Broken Ice

And now I'm cheating because this is not an aerial shot and it was not taken in Iceland. This is actually a picture of the ice on a glacial lake created by the Portage Glacier near Whittier, Alaska. I had to include it, it just looks so cold and icy and inviting and I just want to run and jump in... And I know that would be a very BAD idea and at the time I took the picture my brain was stuck on "can it be warm now please" but now I'm too warm and this picture makes me think happy thoughts.

As always, all my photos and then some can be on my my Flickr page

I found a few interesting sites during my scouring of the internet for information. A few I will definitely be visiting again:

Peakware: All the information you could possibly want on Mountain Peaks. Want to know how high a peak is? Where is it? The best way to climb it? This site has it.

Ski Mountaineering: The Ring of Fire and Beyond: All you could possibly want to know about skiing on volcanoes, or if you're just looking for information on specific volcanoes...

Maptrot: I am in love with this site. Pick your country and then specify what kind of geologic feature you'd like it to find. I had waaaaay too much fun with it today.

I really should go repack my bags and get my apartment ready for my 9 day flying extravaganza. I really, really should. Really should... Any new fanfiction out there...?

Thanks! I tell people that I really have my job as an excuse to take pictures (and hang out with cute boys). And I think I have my livejournal as an excuse to post them *g*

I will happily take you, just as soon as my luggage that doubles as a TARDIS arrives. They said it would be here any day now... *checks watch*

*pretends to be smart and know what a TARDIS is*

How do I get me a job like this? I'll have a Masters degree in a couple weeks, so basically I can make coffee and settle a small armed conflict.

Doctor Who (squee!). It stands for Time And Relative Dimension In Space: it's basically a blue telephone box that's bigger on the inside then it is on the outside. Now if only my luggage worked like that...

I just answered one of those job ads floating around out there. Flight Attendants needed, it was really more of a desperate bid to not be unemployed anymore (as I was living in Manhattan and BROKE). Plus, I had my bachelors degree and it was hacking my parents off that I was unemployed, even though you don't need a degree to be a flight attendant.

Being able to make coffee and settle small armed conflicts are seriously awesome skills to brag about (I suck at making coffee and would probably be a crying sobbing mess at the latter.) So, I'm gonna go with that's just so cool. *g*
