I have retired the Polar Bear as my default icon. Instead I give you an icon based off of artwork that can be found gracing the halls of the Sabancı Mosque in Adana, Turkey. Five pictures of which can be found below (plus two extra of Adana itself)

Sabancı Mosque at Sunrise

Inside Sabancı Mosque:

To enter into the mosque requires that all shoes be taken off and hair must be covered if you're a woman. The Mosque has rental scarves for women such as me who arrived without and it was well worth it to wear that ugly thing for the chance to get a peek at the beautiful artwork and architecture inside.

A little ways down the river from the relatively new Sabancı Mosque is The Stone Bridge. It was built during the 6th Century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, and is the oldest bridge still in use (so sayeth Wikipedia)

I was somewhat amused that this pony and his boy were parked at a gas station.
An Older Form of Transportation

More photos of my, unfortunately, short stay in Adana can be found at my Flickr site

These are gorgeous. And inspiring. And, if I don't say it often enough, thank you for sharing your travels with those of us are (temporarily *hopes*) grounded.

And I love the new icon.

Thank you! And It's my pleasure. Sharing the travels is half the fun of traveling. I figure it's just incentive for those of you who are temporarily grounded to start hatching plots that get you going. :)

It was breathtaking. The pictures really don't do justice to how beautiful it is. I'm glad you liked the photos!

Wow. WOW. I just finished up learning about the Byzantium and medieval Islamic mosques and whatnot in my Ancient Humanities course, and I think those first few pictures were in slides that my professor put up! How very beautiful and awesome.

I swear to god that sightseeing has put all my art history courses and anthro courses to work more then anything else. It makes it more interesting. *g* I'm glad you like them, walking in that place was like being slapped in the face with pretty.
