Pschiatric Center

... as an Abandoned Insane Asylum

For many varied reasons, many of which involve covering my ass, I'm not revealing the name of the Asylum or where its located except that it's in New York. Where in New York... well who knows?

I'm going to let the pictures speak for themselves, although there is a bit of a write up at the end.

I'd been hearing about this place for quite awhile, looking at pictures and just generally daydreaming about the pictures there were to be had in such an abandoned place. We really weren't even expecting to have the chance.

Just in case the chance did present itself I had lugged around a tripod with me all weekend... just in case. A tripod I never used as it was left in the car at the last moment because we didn't think we'd need it.

Little did we know.

The bare bones of the Asylum could be seen everywhere one looked. They'd begun tearing it down but never got farther then removing some of the furniture and gutting the rooms. Heaps of rubble where everywhere. Walls were torn apart with sometimes interesting results. The windows were shattered and in same cases left wide open, letting in all kinds of refuse.

We didn't realize just how big the place was till we were inside. It is massive. Not to mention, easy to get lost in. A fact we didn't realize until we were well inside and started wondering how the hell we were supposed to get back out. Thank god someone had pondered these thoughts long before us and had left arrows spray painted on the walls pointing the way to the exit. We'd probably still be rattling around in there, getting more and more desperate.

Only one room really had any furniture left in it, all of which was tucked away in a corner beneath an open window. The only light in the room. I loved this room from the start and by the end was even more grateful for it on our way back. When we saw it, we knew we were on the right track.

Walking around felt like stepping into a horror movie waiting to happen. The feeling was ratcheted up by all of the leftover Halloween decorations still pinned to the walls. At least, we're assuming the place was shut down around Halloween as the old decorations consist of construction paper cutouts of owls, pumpkins and bats.

We would have loved to have found the morgue, but there was no such luck. On top of forgetting the tripod we also forgot flashlights. Smooth move on our part. We may not have found where they storied the bodies but we had plenty of other things to hold our attention. Like cages in the bathrooms. As odd as it sounds, every bathroom had a cage. I've heard some suggestions that they were for cleaning supplies or what not. Maybe so, but I'm not too terribly certain of that.

The Asylum was a labyrinth and we only saw bits of it. It was lovely in its desolation and abandonment.

I am so pleased with how these pictures came out. I had quite the hard time choosing which ones I wanted to showcase on Livejournal.

I couldn't resist adding this photo in, it's a bit of a self portrait. As is the icon accompanying this post.

Next up... The Halloween Photo Project!
