I didn't think I'd end up watching Season 5 of Doctor Who. I usually watch shows like an ostrich runs from its enemies - with my head in the ground. Yet, here I am, tuning in. Miracles do happen.

I was... underwhelmed by this episode. I really couldn't get into it. Even the last episode, which I had a few problems with, I still found to be fun. This episode, on the other hand, I kept looking at the time remaining and thinking "there's still that much to watch?"

I was surprised when the Doctor apologized for showing up late and blamed it on the Tardis. Here's me anthropomorphizing the ship a fair bit but I imagine she was not pleased with that comment.

I love that they slapped a British flag on the Dalek. And it's got utility pouches! This is a Dalek prepared for any eventuality. He's the boyscout of Daleks and they destroyed him! *woe* This episiode reminds me strongly of a Second Doctor episode where they opened up an alien ship and found some Daleks that pretended to be servants and help out all while creating more of themselves behind the back of the humans. It was also the first Second Doctor episode and he acted like a loon and completely freaked out Polly and Ben - he just regenerated in front of them, picked himself up, got himself locked up and played a recorder all while Ben got more and more pissed and Polly just went along with things. I may be a bit biased in Troughtons favor, but the Second Doctor was AMAZING.

ANYHOW.

I'm still REALLY liking Amy Pond. She's not my favorite companion but I am enjoying her. I'm not sure if I'm being overly critical or if this is an actual thing but I feel like Moffat is going out of his way to show everyone just how SMART and CLEVER and RESOURCEFUL she is. And I'm fine with that, I'm just not sure they're being all that proficient at it. This could just be backlash from The Beast Below which I watched last night where I felt like I spent the ending dodging bricks pretending to be metaphors.

I do wish they would have acknowledge that Amy Pond was wandering about World War II Britain wearing a skirt THAT short. Maybe she got a pass because she was with the Doctor and he gets a pass for a lot of things. Regardless, Dear DW People: GIRLS CAN TOO WEAR TROUSERS.

One of my big wishes for Moffats era was that they'd let the Daleks rest. Three episodes in and that little wish has just been crushed - I knew they were coming but when I heard he was taking over I had hoped they'd get a bit of a retirement.

I want my own tea serving Dalek. If they were to make an action figure of that I will be ALL OVER IT. The new Daleks on the other hand... are they the sports car versions of the Daleks? Blue, Orange, Yellow, Red... Is this the Dalek version of a mid-life crisis? Because it sure sounded like it.

I CALLED THE COOKIE THING. He walked out, held up his "self-destruct" and the first thing I said was "it's a cookie!" It's amazing what noms can do. Food solves all problems!

I feel like Matt Smith does quirky and batty well - he's got an unusual kind of energy and I think it does translate well to the role, but when it comes to the dark side of the Doctor: the serious Oncoming Storm Side, he's not quite bringing it. Of course, when Nine regenerated into Ten I wasn't entirely sure about David Tennant being capable of pulling off the gravitas needed but proved me wrong, grew into the role and really managed to BRING IT. So I'm going to give Matt Smith the benefit of the doubt but I really hope he grasps all this pretty soon - I think there was an inkling of it at the end, but I'm still feel rather disconnected from him when he's playing the serious side of the Doctor.

I loved loved loved the Spitfires in Space! We're ignoring the fact that I just spent half a day in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum drooling over planes. This episode also establishes the fact that the UK was the first country to put men in space. All that trouble the US and the USSR went to to put a man in space and the UK just waltzed in and flew Spitfires into space! Eat your heart out Yuri Gagarin. Of course, they had rather a lot of extraterrestrial help so I'm not entirely sure it counts.

I would love to have seen that briefing: "Right Chaps, you're flying into space to attack an alien space ship. Do try not to buy the farm."

Funny how between Winston Churchill and Harriet Jones, the British government managed to lose the Doctor's phone number. WELL DONE GUYS.

There were some things I liked about this episode, there were some things I didn't like, but overall I was really unimpressed.

I'd really like to be impressed so this depresses me.
