Blah. The ending of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire could have been so much better then it was. It was just way too happy- with Hermione going on about their lives changing and all that stuff. I half expected her to pop out with "I'm pregnant with Viktor's luv child."
It's been a long while since I've read the book, but I remember it ending on a rather sad note with a pronounced sense of 'holy crap! what's going to happen next!' I don't remember it with everyone happily leaving for spring break whilst the French chicks fly off into the sunset.
Meh. I just don't like it when perfectly good movies are ruined by their endings. It seems to me that an ending is a delicate thing and to handle it poorly can be disastrous. It's the last impression a person has. Not something to trifle with.
It wasn't all bad. The CGI had come a long way from the first movie. I loved the battle with the Hungarian Horntail. It was stunning. And I think I've finally reconciled myself to the fact that they've rearranged the Hogwarts grounds. I was rather bitter about it during The Prisoner of Azkaban.
Fred and George were amazing and adorable. They were exactly as they should be. I look forward to their escapades during the Order of the Phoenix. They are so perfect in their roles.
The new Dumbledore (I'm too lazy to actually look up the actors name) continues to be uninspiring in his role. He doesn't lend it the right amount of weight and wisdom. His Dumbledore is one that I wouldn't mind blowing off as someone who didn't know what in the world was going on. I gave him the benefit of the doubt until right after the names had been selected from the Goblet and in the back room he shoves Harry against a wall (or something) and demands to know if Harry entered his own name. It just struck me as something Dumbledore would never do. He's always been Harry's staunchest supporter. I think a good combination would be the wisdom and presence of Richard Harris with the whimsy and energy of the new guy- That would be a good Dumbledore.
Other things I was not particularly fond of: the dance numbers when the visiting schools walked into the great hall and the lava man Sirius. What a waste of Gary Oldman. Voldemort's nose was also an odd thing to behold. And the pacing left much to be desired although I fully understand that they were adapting a very large book and that sacrifices had to be made. I think I've already covered the ending...
The good: Daniel Radcliffe's performance. I thought he did an excellent job during the confrontation with Voldemort and dealing with Cedric's death. His return to Hogswarts with Cedrics body was an intense scene and I thought it was well done. Ron's dress robes were hysterical and one couldn't help but feel sorry for the Patil twins at the Yule Ball. Poor girls.
I hope that in Order of the Phoenix they actually do the book justice instead of belatedly remembering that 'oh yeah, we're a children's movie!' and tacking on some scene that really downgrades the movie.
